Studentships: I am always looking for outstanding students

If you are interested in graduate or undergraduate studies in theoretical & computational biological and soft matter or nanomaterials, please contact Dr. Karttunen. There are many possible projects, for example, in biological physics, biomineralization, disordered proteins, transport in colloidal systems, polymers, drug delivery mechanisms, pattern formation, and multiscale modeling and GPU methods.

New: 1-2 fully funded PhD stundentships are available starting in fall 2012. Applications should be made as soon as possible. I am also looking for students for 2013 (starting either in both January or September).

Strong background in theoretical/physical/computational chemistry or physics is expected.

Banting Fellowships: Banting Fellowships are national postdoctoral fellowships. They are aimed at the top young scientists and are very competitive. The salary is $70,000 per year for two years. If you are interested in applying for a Banting Fellowship to work in our group, please contact me asap. The national deadline is in fall 2012, but due to the competiveness of the program, please contact me early since both the applicant and the host need to be part of the application The fellowship is named after the Canadian Nobel Laureate Sir Frederick Grant Banting who discovered insulin.

Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowships: If you are a citizien of an EU country, this is a possibility for up to 2 year fellowship. Please see the details at the EU FP7 Marie Curie Actions site.

Visiting & Exchange students

Over the past 10 years, we have had exchange students every year (typically PhD students) for 2-12 months. If you are interested, please contact me early.

We are also part of the following research networks

Pacific Instute of Theoretical Physics collaborative network Complex Materials, the European Science Foundation (ESF) programme, Functional Dynamics in Complex Chemical and Biological Systems (FUNCDYN), FinNano nanoscience and technology program

How to apply/enquire:

You can always email and ask me for availability even if nothing has been announced. Please include your CV & a statment of interests.

Formal PhD studentship applications must be made through the Guelph-Waterloo program in Chemistry and Biochemistry (GWC2). The procedure and formal requirements are available at the GWC2 web site.
